West Virginia requires title, registration, and an annual safety inspection on every trailer driven on public roads. Trailers over 3,000 lbs need brakes operable from the cab plus an emergency breakaway brake. Max combined length is 65 ft, max trailer width is 96 in (102 in on designated roads), and max height is 13 ft 6 in.

Title, registration, and inspection

Every car, truck, and recreational vehicle in West Virginia needs a title and registration to drive on public roads. Trailers are included.

West Virginia also requires an annual safety inspection on registered vehicles, and that extends to trailers. After passing inspection, a safety inspection certificate must be affixed to the trailer. The state takes this seriously: driving without a valid inspection sticker is its own ticketable offense.

Dimensions

  • Max combined length (vehicle plus trailer, with bumpers): 65 ft.
  • Max trailer length: 40 ft.
  • Max trailer width: 96 in is the default, 102 in is allowed on designated state and federal highways.
  • Max trailer height including load: 13 ft 6 in.

Loads above these limits need a Division of Highways oversize permit. Riding inside a house trailer while it is being towed is prohibited.

Hitch, drawbar, and safety chains

West Virginia hitch rules:

  • Vehicles towing a trailer must use a safety chain in addition to the primary connection.
  • The drawbar or other primary connection must be strong enough to hold the towed vehicle’s weight on any grade it is operated on. It cannot exceed 15 ft in length.
  • If a chain, rope, or cable is the primary connection between vehicles, a white flag at least 12 in square must be visible on it.

The 15 ft limit is enforced. A long chain dragged on the ground between vehicles is not legal.

Lighting

West Virginia trailer lighting requirements:

  • Turn signals
  • Tail lights
  • Brake lights
  • License plate light
  • Reflectors

If you tow with a 2021 to 2026 Ford F-150, 2022 to 2026 Super Duty, Ranger, Expedition, Maverick, Transit, or Lincoln Navigator, check the recall status for 26C10 (NHTSA 26V104000). Ford issued an OTA software fix in March 2026 for an Integrated Trailer Module fault affecting trailer light and brake operation. Vehicles still waiting for the update can show intermittent trailer wiring problems.

Speed limits

No special trailer speed limit in West Virginia general traffic. Posted limits apply. State Police can stop drivers for unsafe operation regardless of speed.

Mirrors

West Virginia drivers must have mirrors that allow a view of 200 ft behind the vehicle. If the trailer and load block that view, mirrors and reflectors must be configured to restore it. The state does not mandate a specific mirror brand or style, only the 200 ft visibility outcome.

Brakes

Trailers and semi trailers with a gross weight over 3,000 lbs must have:

  • Brakes that are strong enough to control the vehicle.
  • Brakes that the driver in the tow vehicle can apply from the cab.
  • An emergency brake setup on the trailer that activates automatically if the trailer breaks free from the tow vehicle.

In practice, that means an electric brake controller in the tow vehicle, electric brakes on the trailer, and a working breakaway switch and battery on the trailer tongue. Tekonsha, Redarc, and Curt all make compliant brake controllers. Pre-trip routine: confirm the breakaway battery is charged and pull the pin with the trailer chocked to verify the brakes lock.
